Jonathon Winter has a comment about this on his web site. He points out that advanced design shaves a few percent off the drag of a hull, while a new canoe can see skin friction increased by 50% in a few months from scratches on the bottom, without the owners even NOTICING.
The moral is, if you are competitive, contunued obsessing is appropriate. If you are not, you'll find you can launch with friends in boats of widely varing hull speeds and condition and still get to your destination together.
