On such a long boat, you're likely to have less trouble keeping it going straight, and conversely, more trouble getting it to turn. It will take multiple sweeps to turn the boat around. Also, you'll probably appreciate having a rudder so the kids can paddle willy-nilly while Dad keeps the boat on-course. I'd go with the rudder.
