: It's unfortunate that none of these design tools seems to incorporate any
: code which shows up differences in performance in anything other than
: completely flat, static water. I don't know about you, but I rarely paddle
: in conditions like those, and it's generally how boats cope in wind and
: waves which make me prefer one over another.Andy, the thing is that the programs could, but you'd find that they'd be based on certain arbitrary wave lengths, etc... and you'd find that some boats perform better in a specific wave length than another and in another wave length it could be exactly opposite.
The important use in design programs is to be able to find a way to arrive at the smallest resistance for a specific kayak while maintaining the design criteria for the boat. Flat water predictions can work perfectly fine for this.
When comparing kayaks, I find resistance predictions useful when I paddle some kayaks that feel almost exactly the same to me. Because most people can't tell the difference of as much as 10% difference in resistance, it becomes useful at that point to know which boat is by the numbers more efficient. When a 2% increase in resistance on a kayak could equal as much as taking 20 to 30 minutes longer to get to camp, well... It might be nice to know.
Anyway, resistance prediction is all about fun. At least, it's all about fun for me.
