I am on the other end of the scale. You can't convince me that they didn't intend for this modification to be a benefit.
These people hunted all down the coast in armadas of up to several hundred boats. On trips of this length don't you think that a 5% increase in efficiency would be noticed? (They went as far as California and northern Mexico)
I used to go to an orchard and buy apples by the box every year. The owner never weighed the apples, he just picked them up the box and told me how much was in it. (These were boxes of all different sizes) He was never wrong! At least not by enough to make it show on a scale of one pound increments. Maybe he was a mystic!
Take one of the boats from the design right before baidarkas came on the scene and compare the two. Was the improvement only a few percent or was it much more? It is a huge testament to the innovation if they are still getting a few percent better performance than a modern kayak!
It doesn't matter how or why they came up with this improvement, they were the first to use it so they get the credit. This is the same as Marconi getting credit for inventing the radio when Tesla had discovered it, demonstrated it and patented it years before!
Why would you want to end a good discussion? {:o)
