And there's a reason they look like girders.
When they design a tri you need to be able to support _20_times_ ( for dynamics ) the weight of the craft. These racing tris actually float the central hull!
As far a drag in concerned an airfoil is the best shape. Unfortunately it's one of the _worse_ cross sections for a beam.
Piture taking the joists on a house and laying them on thier side. And then expecting them to still support the house.
So what designers do is either construt an I-beam and wrap it with an airfoil. Or make the airfoil out of something real stiff, like carbon fiber.
