If you really want competitive racing based on crew skills, look no further than one-design, in which the olympics is at the top of the heap. There are a lot of one-design fleets out there and the racing is top notch.
The point on the technology from Americas cup is well taken; remember the wing keel? Also, the BOC has given us things like movable water ballast.
I seem to recall one race where they had applied a plastic stick-on surface to the wetted surface that was like fish scales. I wonder if that is what we are referring to, and if it is available or applicable to kayaks.
