Ive felt the same way on that topic but have drifted between two points concerning it...
The foirst point is the one you mentioned about everyone having the same boat. I like that as it leaves more in the hands of the sailors talents.
The other point I drift to tho is that the competition in creating a faster sailboat for the Americas Cup has made progress in keel and and sail design that otherwise probably wouldve taken longer to develop...if ever. Incidentaly I know the guy who sailed the Patient Lady... a Cat with a flying wing for a sail made of composite matrerials. Very similar to the one that caused so much controversey some years back. He claimed something in the neighborhood of 20 knots.
