"boat shape" not required?

I remember reading an article by one of the developers of "Kaper". He said something to the effect that the program was accurate for "reasonable" hull shapes. I was disapointed to learn that naval architechture couldn't help beyond these gross shape parameters. On the other hand, if the details of hull shape really can be neglected, we are free to shape the hull for other design goals (handling in waves, stability, surfing, etc.) without worrying about losing speed.

If, as I keep hearing, hard chines below the waterline don't cost much in drag, it is hard to imagine any shape causing trouble.
