Another aspect of this food storage = cultural advances theory, is that individuals could become specialized.
This would mean that a people with an abundance of stored food would have a society similar to ours,in which, some people were hunters, some were carvers, some were painters, etc. If this was the case then it wouldn't be too hard to imagine some being boat builders. This would help to explain the similarities in boats from different areas, because they would all be built by the same people.
In areas where food was scarce there would be fewer people and less specialization, so although the boats may be similar, they all vary in detail and quality. People in these areas would most likely build their own boats as they would need all of the food gathered for their own consumption.
Different groups would have different designs which they felt were superior. (We would have the Guillemots, the CLCs, the Redfishes, and the Laughing Loons all arguing the superiority of their boats.) Any outsider wanting to know which was the best boat would get a different answere from each group and would be flooded with information extolling the virtues of various designs.
Now I can't remember if I am talking about the Inuit or this bulletin board!!! Anyway, I'm hungry so I think I'll go to the restaurant and have dinner. Wonder if they'll take a kayak as payment?!?!
