I went back to the original article and tried to glean a bit more of the context in which it was written. The article is about 10 years old. It seems to be part of an effort by the University of Alaska at Fairbanks to reach out to the community with legitimate scientific information. It seems they got a grant to retain several scientific writers over the years, who produced a series of columns for the local newspaper, in addition to researching readers questions.
Taken in the context of a newspaper story the flaws in the article are a little more understandable than they would be in a scholarly dissertation. I thing much of my confusion was that the writer seemed to be a scholar and a scientist, yet the content of the article left many questions about the validity of the conclusions. Viewed as a part of a weekly newspaper column, perhaps it is appropriate and our standards should be a little different.
Nevertheless, it does seem to have provoked a lively discussion that raises more questions than were answered. We've got a great group of people here.
