Since I live in Kansas and like to fish is the reason I selected the Mill Creek 13. With a 29 inch beam (same as Old Towns plastic kayaks) and large entry, it should be stable and carry all my gear. I am 6 ft 2 inchs, 185 lbs. with a size 12 shoe. The modifications that I mentioned have to do with the deck. I am putting a deck on it like Pygmy puts on theirs. It is not "tortured" but has a seam down the middle. The other modifications, using Pygmys idea, is to put 4 oz glass inside and out on the hull and the deck. With this additional glass, I will not have to install bulkheads yet keep the weight between 33 & 36 lbs. Also, I am using $10.88 a sheet 5mm Luan mahogany underlayment plywood. I did a lot of research before selecting the Mill Creek but their were some things that I did not like about it. That is why I made the changes. I don't think you gain anything by using marine ply over 5 mm Luan if you are going to glass inside and out. You get the strenth because of the surface tension of the fiberglass on both sides of the ply and because the plywood won't compress. And using butt joints, every jouint ends up with two sheets of glass on each side of the joint since the joints are taped before you apply the glass. One last thing, the boat is easy to build if you take your time.
