I think that they did experiment some over time. If you look at the traditional kayaks in different regions, they vary according to the conditions and purpose. The Alaska Recovery Kayak is a prime example, with the advent of guns they could hunt from shore, so they made shorter slower kayaks that handle better in the surf. I think they used the tried and true but understood what worked for what they needed and would make changes if needed. It appears that they had a good understanding of how and why the kayaks performed the way they did, it was their livelyhood.
