hi again,
no direct experience, except easy paddling in futura surf skis. but from what I've seen is that the racing kayaks and surfskis are about the same length as the patuxent, mostly from what I've seen is different degrees of skinny and tippy. For what it matters in a 15 mile race back in the bay area the surf skis had a rough time in rough water, the one- off racing sea kayaks were at the front ,and one guy that was a rep for dagger and off the olympic racing circuit was a short distance behind the racing kayaks that weighed half as much. He was paddling a kevlar Sitka. The rest of the mob in "faster sea kayaks than the Sitka" were still a much farther distance behind.
So if equipment is still your focus, why not try making a simple two panel bent hull kayak? a 21" wide round bottom boat would still have a lot less in the water than a comparable boat and since your focus is racing it could be built lighter than a patuxent kit.
