In Response To: Surf Kayak Mark II *LINK* *Pic* (Nick Schade - Guillemot Kayaks)

: I've tried to incorporate some of the suggestions I got on my first drawing
: for the surf kayak. Here is the modified version so far. I cut quite a bit
: of length off, added rocker with more kick at the bow and stern, and
: increased the volume of the stern.

: I am not competely happy with the plan (viewed from top) shape, but I think
: I'm getting close.

: Any further comments would be appreciated.

The concept is intriguing, a stitch built wood surf kayak, and the second boat (Mark II) is much better than the first.

Some suggestions;

Bump the outline out to 25", this would increase stability and make for a faster planing surf boat that would fit more (bigger) paddlers.

The rocker seems very flat with an abrupt rise at the end, progressive rockers fit the shape of a wave and surf better.

I did 3 prototype surf boats with round tails and did not like the performance as much as a square tail. A square tail gives a longer line to trim and draw turns, round tails tend to pop out sideways from the face of a wave and not hold in as well.

For bottom contour, instead of a "vee" bottom I would suggest that a tri plane bottom would be more forgiving, less prone to "tripping" or window shading, while still being able roll up on the edge for carving turns. 4" wide by 3/4" at the stern and 2" wide by 3/8" about 8" back fron the bow, blend and proportion the chine bevel between these to points.

The coaming ring elevations look realy good, as far as fore and aft position, I would suggest that the back of the opening be 18" behind the measured center with the seat back at 13" behind the measured center, this would put the CG at 3" behind the measured center. This is a good position for paddling and rolling a directional (or asymetrically) rockered, finless surf kayak.

Would shaping a beaded foam plug be a good way to create a master that could be used to make templates for a stitch and glue wood boat?

For some good pictures of surf kayak rocker profiles, check out http://www.customkayak.com and check out the Mako line of surf kayaks. The is a profile picture of the 8'8" Mini Mako, 8'2" Micro Mako, and 8'2" Mako Exterme (MX).
