Assymetric paddle blades

Does anybody out there have a good explanation for the reason behind Assymetric paddle blades? I have been told this type of blade keeps the immersed area symetrical as the paddle enters the water, but as you don't pull until it is all the way in, I don't see the advantage.

Barring an explanation, I would like to hear from anybody who has compared them to symmetrical blades on the water. The paddles I've tried have varied too much in other ways to make a sensible comparison.
