Putty for cedar strips?

What is the best putty to use to match cedar strips? Gilpatrick says to use Durham's Water Putty, but I found it is too light colored to match my cedar. I have tried using aniline dyes but the cedar accepts the dye better than the Durham's. I've even tried bleaching and dyeing. I'm about to give up making samples and just letting the epoxy fill the small gaps and staple holes on my canoe, unless someone can give me some advice. Thanks.
