: I'm not sure I follow your first suggestion Mike. Can you point me to a good
: web resource that explains in more detail? Also, to build a model, don't I
: have to develop panels and cut them out first?my idea is a few sentence guess of the way that i would approach it, nick points out whole book(s) written about it. if you go that way try to get that or some other like it- try a library or university library or used book seller on the web(is that web based?). don't know web based but if you really want it use the rhino suggestion - it'll have support documents prob web based.
and you get a (virtual) model out of it, too.
for the real model approach, you build a quick one with big gaps(use sections instead of stitching to keep panels), either fill the gaps and take apart and measure. Or more easily - shoot normals(lay out scraps) to a scaled(linearly marked off)reference line on each panel and measure/record the offsets along this scaled reference line. Or dont scale and make/mark the offsets directly on each panel (to a refline) take model apart and use that as the next model pattern.
make a new model using these offsets and fine tune.
you will get more out of your real model than a virtual one if you make it large enough.
when/if i do it, i'll use both a program and models. i dont know which first.doesnt matter really. of course many hand(for me) sketches come first.
