Drawing developable surfaces by hand

I’m designing a hard chined S & G boat mostly by hand on the drafting board. In order to outline the panels to be cut out of plywood, I need to project the hull surface onto a flat surface (the plywood sheet). Does anyone know of a reference describing how to do this by hand?
Aalmost seems this is a lost art what with all the cool software available.
Thanks in advance.
