Unless you really know what you are doing modifying a boat can result in a painful learning process. The changes you suggest might work but then again they may not. Before doing them you should do a hydrostatic study of the boat and calculate how your proposed cahnges will affect it.
The 17LT is not a baidarka and making a few changes turn it into one. If you really like a baidarka you will do better to build on and hang on to your current boat in case you find you really don't like teh baidarka as much as you thought.
