: While Ive gotten my kayak wet, I've still got a lot of performance
: questions...: I know a lot of kayakers will sit out high winds rather than go headlong into
: them [or any angle for tht matter]. Just how much does wind take out of
: forward speed given a head wind? Im guessing, you probably lose possibly a
: full knot fo every 15 knots of head wind....does that sound right? With
: that said, how much wind before the paddler can make absolutely no forward
: progress?I don't think there will be any hard and fast rule for the effect of wind. Waves will have an effect and some waves will make the effect of wind less while others will have more effect than the wind. You will also have to look at paddles and paddling technique.
Wind resistance will go up as a square of the wind speed, thus a 30 knot wind will create 4 times as much force as a 15 knot wind. Therefore if a 15 knot wind slows you down 1 knot, a 30 knot wind should theoretically slow you down by 4 knots. I don't know if this is really the case in actual practice.
