Which paddles??

Something I noticed out on the shallow lakes here ( and I assmume you would have this same problem in the shallower parts of a river, albeit the Missouri isn't exactly shallow ) was that the paddle hit bottom alot.

I notice flat water river rafters using poles alot.

Are there any paddle designs that won't break if I had to use them as a pole?

... and then wouldn't be useless as a paddle once you get out in the deep stuff.

I was thinking of a long greenland with a hardened tip, like the ones the ancients used to also hunt with. That way I wouldn't need both a paddle and a pole.
