Belton,
I'm building a Petrel and was interested in how Nick produced the finish on the Prototype Petrel. The stain used was Behlen Solar Lux, Cordovan Mahogany. He told me that he used it straight from the bottle, no reducer at all. And he applied two coats. I built a 1 foot square test panel using strips of different woods I have available; cedar mostly, but also some exotic woods that I was entertaining as accent strips. The result comes out quite dark, and the contrast one would hope for from the accent strips was overwhelmed by the stain. I've decided not to use it so, if you happen to live close to me in central Florida, you can have my bottle.
