Epoxy: Damaged Boat

This weekend my front hatch cover came off (extremely high winds on the mackinac bridge) luckily I had tethered it with a leather shoestring. But it made some pretty bad dings in the deck as the lid was flopping around. It broke the lip that the lid seats on and split the lid 3/4 way down the length. I have been thinking of recovering my deck anyway as in some places you can start to see sparkling in the cloth and in small places you can start to see the weave. The question is, can I sand off all the fiberglass down to bare wood and re-cover the whole deck?
desperate for help
Ron
