Off Topic: standard equipment or not?

(it actually has nothing to do with building but sice this is the section more populated ill post it here, if it bothers it can be moved or deleted)

A few weeks ago i had someone looking at me badly because i had a short knife (the pukko kind) on me, it was a short paddle but i do camping too and i dont stay there putting much stuff on and off things like a pfd every single time i use it.
So, how many carry a knife with them? it seems a pretty natural thing to me but the more people talk to me about it the more they make me feel like a wet rambo.
