Well, I tried to give them a good soak with a mild soap...kinda worked. I have two pair of booties, one at home in the trunk of my car (and I thought the stink was rotten banana peels) and the other pair in Calgary buried somewhere in the trunk of Myrl's car. I believe Myrl had the biohazzard emergency guys bag 'em and tag 'em as a noxious health hazzard. Those booties are only 7 years old. The heel tore on them so I cut them shorter and made 'em into deck shoes. They work great for summer hours. The other booties are ankle high and work well for late fall paddling.
