Are you talking about a GPS system that provides instructions and miniature maps while you are underway? I tried such a system in a rental car and got terribly frustrated with it. Is it not easier to use a basic GPS in conjunction with maps of your region? You'd have to use topo maps alongside road maps so that you could correlate your GPS-reported position with the roadways.

But, heck, wouldn't that be lots of fun?
