: Ever use 3oz glass for the deck?

I am in the final stages of building the lightest possible boat I can. I used 5/32" strips on the hull, 1/8" strips on the deck. The glass is single layer 3.25 oz. satin weave inside and out. I love this stuff. It is so easy to work with, drapes well, wets out with roller easily, little squeegeeing needed, and uses much less resin than plain weave cloth. just one fill coat and start sanding. I reinforced several areas inside with narrow strips of carbon fiber. I have used less than one gallon of epoxy on this 20 foot kayak. In conclusion: I expect I will only use the 3.25 oz glass from now on. In the past, I have used 6 oz plain weave, 4 oz plain weave and 4 oz S-Glass but I think they were all overkill for my use. Rough water conditions require heavy duty layups, Flat water racing requires the lightest layup. Most paddling conditions fall somewhere in between. I have already built the heavy duty boats. Now I want to have the lightest.

Build for your usage and definitely use the 3.25 oz glass.

my $.02,

Larry C.
