I have IR Reggie backbands in two of my boats, but I had IR custom-build them without the ratchets. They're completely unnecessary in a sea kayak and can be a liability if they fail - a common problem back then- or jam with sand or other debris. I installed a padeye near the top edge, to which I attach bungee cord the connects under the coaming. I mount it with the top pulled back somewhat so that when I enter the boat, the backband creates slide of sorts to allow me to enter easily. I just lean forward after I'm in and the backband pops up to where I want it. When I push against it, the bungee allows it to pivot to fit the contour or my pelvis.
