Ned, I think you hit the governing words "commercial builders" or I think "experienced builders".

You built a few boats and if you feel tha weight saving is worth working with thinner strips then give it a try. You can sand off a 1/16 off a boat in about an hour or less. I think new builders struggle with alignment and techniques with bending and twisting strips into place and a little thickness give room for error during final sanding. I think you can easily thin a few strips when you need more flexibility. Personally I don't think thinner strips is the way of the world with strip building. Wood is stronger per weight than glass and it does have merit. We all would like lighter boats but I think the way to that end is.... never paddle where you will hit anything.
