He builds SOF boats as light as he thinks he can, and could not consider using commercial hatches weighing nearly half as much as the kayak.

His boats must be really light (5 kg total?), since the largest SeaLect oval hatch (rim and cover, I just weighed one) weighs 1.1 kg. !

You guys have to stop using those old cast aluminum hatch covers like the early Nordkapps had!! :-)

he says it is watertight enough for his use

What use is that?
I don't understand the hatch construction, but it sounds like the 'cover' is a piece of kayak skin attached to the boat with velcro. Is that correct?
