Your design inspired me. I decided to make one that would work on my drill press.
That was before I saw John Abercrombies post about the larger surface of the belt sander being an advantage. Oh well, another project for another winter day.

I've used drill press jigs like yours for thicknessing - with the right wood/abrasive combination they work just fine.
I've also used a 'RoboSander' drum for pattern sanding.
