I agree that it's split prone and I would never use it for boat building again. Additionally, be very careful when machining it, as I've had edges shatter an throw splinters when rounding them with a router. Douglas fir is also pretty heavy for a softwood. While it's tempting to use something you have on-hand, I would suggest that you're better off spending a few bucks and buy better material.
