Re: Patent vs Trade Mark, names

On a more serious note, some names can be interpreted differently as the years roll by.

A couple of Mariner examples:
Mariner XL - people now (in the midst of the 'body size revolution') tend to think this is an 'Extra Large' kayak - I had a few questions along those lines when I was selling one last year. In fact, the 'XL' stood for 'Excel', so I spelled it out in the logo.

The same thing crops up with the Mariner Max, which isn't that big a boat, though it's bigger than the other members of the same 'family' - the Express and the Elan. The 'Max' was more about 'Maximum performance', maximum capability in an all-round boat, etc...it definitely feels smaller than most 'expedition' boats.

So it's definitely safer to use more 'abstract' names (Prana,Avocet,Scorpio,Frej etc) which don't have any common 'meaning'.
As well as the unique trademark aspect ....
