Strip: Name me a basic set of sharpening stones

I'm going to swing for a Veritas honing guide. I'm tired of random sharpening. I've been sharpening/honing my planes and chisels using an old oil stone I bought years ago. Time to grow up I guess. : )

Anyway, I have a DMT dual Coarse/Fine diamond block we use in the kitchen, for all our cutlery. I like the diamond blocks, instead of laying down sandpaper on glass flats. Should I consider water stones instead?

I'm a hobbyist woodworker, with no delusions of grandeur so, I want a reasonable, basic set of quality stones.

What say you??
