The heat trick should work, but like Rob said it might cause stress specks in your layup, but if you can just plan on sanding them out after and reglassing.

In the interest of providing alternative solutions, you could just lop the last bit of the deck off, then fit on a chunk of cedar and shape it down to match the hull. It can look quite good.
