I am quite happy with Dyson's 14-oz basket-weave polyester. I don't find it all that much more difficult to work with than lighter weights, and I am not obsessed by "light weight" the way that other people are. I think that if the test were 8-oz nylon against 14-oz polyester the results would be different. Taking the point about safety well to heart, I don't think that it's best to go with the lightest weight nylon anyway.

I also think that it's important to consider the differences in coatings options between the two fabrics. The stretch is what improves the puncture resistance of nylon, but with that stretch comes a much more limited selection of coatings that will work on it. Coelan is truly the only adequate coating in comparison to the stretch % of nylon. I can't afford it. So, while you may not replace a nylon skin because of a puncture or a tear, you will likely have to replace it before it would otherwise be needed because of the failure of the coating. Polyester works well with standard marine topsides paint, and that is much more affordable. If you're just going to use rustoleum over your nylon you may as well use polyester, because the coating will crack. (BTW- I don't think that concrete coatings are a magic or even ideal coating, and they do not give very good results. They're not actually elastic, just flexible- and pretty much all coatings are flexible. It's the great elasticity of Coelan that most of them lack).
