Although it will be another month at least before I can start my ACTUAL kayak build, I have probably built it a dozen times in my head, changing steps as I get new information from other forum members and watching videos of other builds. One builder mentioned varnish sagging, or maybe the cloth sagging when being varnished. This potential problem might be prevented by spraying several very light coats of varnish rather than rolling or brushing on two heavier coats (thinning the varnish 10%-20%). I will be building my kayak inside a storage shed that I am now working on. It has a metal roof with no insulation, so the temperature inside will get into the 90s and should help the varnish cure pretty fast before I cover the top, I am thinking that I might spray the interior, cloth and wood, with a couple of coats of varnish. The top, of course, will only be varnished on the exterior. Has anyone used this technique of spraying on the varnish? Are there any concerns with spraying vs. brushing or rolling it on? I have sprayed lots of varnish on wood, but not on cloth. Another consideration is oil or water based varnish? My shed has a door at either end so I can pull air through with a fan reducing an accumulation of fumes. There will be mostly closed boxes on shelves, so I'm not worried about overspray getting on anything. As soon as spraying is finished, I'll close the doors to keep bugs out and off my wet varnish.
