Thanks for the info Dave. There is so much confusing or conflilcting information on the WEB. While polyester, and i assume that is dacron, may be easier to work, i have read that it is not very puncture resistent. I also read that it is recommended to put a layer of glass cloth and resin over the polyester skin, using 4 oz. cloth for each layer, to make the skin more rugged (and heavier i might add). I watched a video of the nylon being put on a kayak on skinboat.org and it didn't look as difficult as the one you described.

My kayak will have a profile more like a boat, with a slight V bottom than a rounded bottom. (see the attached drawing) I made one called the Plyak, using 1/4" plywood as the skin. It was a good one, but heavy. It paddled and tracked very well. (see the two attached photos)

My idea of coverring is to tack the bottom cover along the keelson, then stretch it around and up over the sheer flamps and tack it to the top of the sheer clamps then cut off the excess. When i do the top decking, i would stretch the cover over the deck and tack it to the sides of the sheer clamps. After sealing i would attach rub rails to the sheer clamps, covering the tacked and cut edges. I would split the fabric at the stems, wrapping one side around the stem and tacking it to the other side, then wrap the other side around the stem and epoxy it to the stem, trimming off the excess. At least this sounds like a good plan, no matter if i am using nylon or polyester cloth.

I hope i got the images in OK.
