Aye, there's the rub.

This may well introduce more problems than it solves, but if the goal is something really robust with no moving parts, what if the daggerboard were held in place with magnets, rather than a fixed axle or pivot? The mounting bracket would be U-shaped, with the opening towards the stern, so if you hit something the daggerboard would simply break away. Of course, it'd have a line or bungie attaching it to the boat for retrieval. Bracket could be integral to the stern, or perhaps it's more like a flat spot built into the hull - sorta like a Viking larboard.

It clearly wouldn't be as convenient to deploy - I suppose you'd need to use a boathook or something - but no moving parts, nothing to kink up or get fouled by sand.
