+1 for Jays method,I, like many new builders have worked with wood for many years BUT the epoxy part of building kayaks was the big mystery. I have built 3 kayaks (still a rookie) and still seal coat, The good thing about epoxy is it's very hard to screw up, you can let it cure then sand down to the wood with no serious problems. Nick R.
