Well John, I will disagree with the retrofit, It certainly can be installed after construction but it is a pain. If you do any paddling in large bodies of water I think it's necessary, I paddled Sarasota bay 2 yrs ago in my Night Heron with no skeg, and paddled the whole trip on one side. I then retrofit my kayak with Etiennes retractable skeg and paddled the same trip with no problem. The moral of this story is"better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it".
