As an artist, there are several products like "odorless" mineral spirits, or "odorless" turpentine that I feel are marketed more toward hobbyists. In art school, where materials handling is a big deal, there is great suspicion of "odorless" products and we were always encouraged not to use them. Turpentine especially has been around forever and it's always smelled, so what did they add to make it NOT smell? THat's the logic. Even finely refined artist-grade turpentine smells. The absolute best hand made oil paints smell. So...

But to get back to the question, I normally don't use a respirator when wetting out fabric. I use West, virtually no odor. I use a respirator for all sanding and for a day or two after sanding whenever i'm in my shop unless I can sand with the door open and fans on. I bought a huge fan to make into a dust filter for the shop, but haven't built it yet.

Mirka- good stuff- I've used their abralon, but it wears out quickly, and I hand sand a lot, so it's not a final solution. I think it works best once you have the entire surface faired and you're just refining the scratches.

Back to the salt mines...
