Thinking about it I believe I overstated that there is more waste.

Basically I don't like scarfing on individual strips. It may be that my technique is not the best and I don't get good joints, causing me to redo the scarf joint. My mistake is generally not getting the scarf to match up, leaving a divot in the surface, or a lots of glue which looks bad.

In either case, if I need to make more than one fix I generally start that strip over.
It seams that others don't have this problem so it may just by my personal problem.

In either case, I just find butt joints easier overall.

Another point is that I no longer worry about trashing a few strips, unless I don't have enough left without cutting another board.
