I used to do them but they're so much work and very hard to maintain unless you just ignore the varnish and dirt build up.

They are a bit hard to maintain. Sanding down in the cups is annoying. Refinishing is more complicated than a perfectly clean deck, but it is easier than raised padeyes.

My decks aren't as curved at the sides as yours but you could add wedges top and bottom to firm up more.

I do suggest wedges or shims in my instructions. http://www.guillemot-kayaks.com/guillemot/blog/admin/installing_recessed_deck_line_fittings I just find it works fine without.

I do also have a feed-through fitting that I use where refinishing is trivial. The installation process is the same.
