Hi Randy. I can't get pins locally, so I get them off Ebay. They are about an inch long.

I don't use a spacer unless I need to bang one all the way in, but I rarely do that these days, relying on the heat gun to get strips to behave themselves. If I need a spacer I use an offcut of 4mm ply.

I don't bend the nails or put them in at an angle, they are just there to get the strip on conveniently and quickly, and to hold it in place at the formers. Between formers I use green tape to hold the strips together and spring lamps to keep them aligned if necessary. I use rubber strips and spring lamps if I need more force.

I don't hammer them in very much. Just enough to get a decent purchase. The more left sticking out the easier they are to remove. I keep the old pins. I use them over and over again. They are very easy to remove with a small claw hammer or with pliers.

For the sake of cosmetics I use a pin in every strip, at every former, even if one is not needed. To me it looks better if the pin marks are regular and look deliberate. For this reason I also aim to keep the pins more ore less centered on the strip, and in a straight line along the former. I actually don't mind the pin holes. It's all part of the process.

Really, I can't see the point in staples. Two holes instead of one. Also, with a hammer you have complete control over how much driving force is used. I doubt the stapler is much quicker putting the staples in, and the nails are probably quicker coming out.
