As a former staple and stapler salesman......id like to add my two cents.

First, you cannot rely on a brand of staples that used to be good, remaining good......

Second.....A simple methond I used reliably to determine a good staple was to use the "twist" method. With your fingernail, peal off one staple and twist it round and round. Good steel will rotate many times and you'll be able to feel the resistance before breaking. Poor steel will rotate only a few times before breaking and it will feel noticeably weak.....
