I would make sure NOT to use a de-waxed shellac. Thats the one water-based finishes WILL stick to.So use regular shellac, not "Seal Coat". I also understand Frog Tape is very good for masking dyes. Havent tried it myself, goes without saying build a test piece first! Love to hear your results.

In the photo the western red cedar on the hull sides was dyed to intensify the dark color.

The flame maple detail stripe was masked and sealed with shellac. Then each edge of the stripe masked with frog tape individually and dyed. Any over bleed is easily sanded away.

If you look at the far inside of the hull you see no stripe where the whole surface was dyed.

Your results may vary. Test, test, test.
