I've used dye on a couple of builds and the glue between strips seems to block the dye from bleeding across, so if you are careful cutting in the stain, it's not a problem. Additionally, the dye tends to just affect the surface so a light sanding will remove it where you get a bit sloppy (at least with the woods I've used -I've never worked with basswood so if it's especially porous, I suppose it might penetrate deeper). Of course, you need to take some care with the sanding, too, or you'll remove it from the cedar.
