I tend to heat on an as-needed basis, starting as long before I need to start working as possible. I have a lot of chemicals that aren't supposed to freeze (polishes and glues and dyes, etc.), and I have a cabinet that I close the door on and put a 60w light bulb in. Doesn't get so hot that it's an ignition threat for the solvents in the polishes, but it stays way above freezing all winter.
