I use two diamond steels; coarse and fine. I have a couple of roller guides, but I rarely use them. I just eyeball it. I also have a leather strop to remove the burr. I tend to do a light touch up on the fine stone fairly frequently.

Back in my carving days I cared more, but the novelty surrounding sharpening has long since gone for me. These days sharp enough for the task is sharp enough.

Rule one... Never lend tools with edges. Actually avoid lending any tools.

Rule two... If you have to lend a tool, absolutely forbid anyone else to do you the favour of sharpening it.

I would like to get a machine for edging wide planer blades for the thicknesser. i mostly work with cedar though, so it probably wouldn't be worth the expense, for the rare occasion that it is required, I just send them out.
